Presbyopia correction Korea University searches: five beliefs about lens surgery, checked

Presbyopia correction is done at Korean university hospitals and at specialist eye clinics. For elective lens surgery, what matters is who measures your eyes, who chooses the lens and who follows you after you fly home.

Yes, presbyopia correction is done both at Korean university hospitals and at specialist eye clinics. For elective lens surgery, the safeguard that matters most is who measures your eyes and who makes the surgical call. At EYEONCE in Gangnam, the surgeon who evaluates you is the surgeon who operates on you and follows your recovery. If “presbyopia correction Korea University” is what you typed, the worry underneath may be this: “A surgeon at home already called my eyes tricky, so shouldn't I only trust a big teaching hospital?”

That instinct makes sense when the operation happens inside the eye and your flight home is only days away. Five beliefs usually come along with it, and each one gets a short, direct answer below.

If your eyes have already been called difficult, send a photo of your current glasses prescription on WhatsApp, including the reading section, and ask the one question that's been nagging you, for example whether lens surgery is an option for your eyes at all. You can write in English, Chinese, Mongolian or Thai.

Is presbyopia correction a single operation?

Belief one: there is one presbyopia surgery, and the only choice is where to have it. In reality, it's a family of decisions. The American Academy of Ophthalmology describes presbyopia as a normal part of aging. The eye's natural lens gradually loses its ability to change focus. Reading glasses and multifocal contact lenses are the everyday answers, and surgery is one option among several.

For most people, near focus starts slipping somewhere around 40 to 45. When presbyopia is corrected surgically at EYEONCE, the natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens. The choices include monofocal lenses for one clear distance, trifocal lenses such as Clareon PanOptix and FineVision, extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) lenses such as Vivity, and toric versions that also correct astigmatism.

Between 45 and 55, several of these paths can apply to the same person. If a cataract is already starting, one lens can treat the cataract and the presbyopia together.

Do I need a university hospital if my eye is difficult?

Belief two: only a large teaching hospital is careful enough for a complicated eye. University hospitals in Korea, including those linked to Korea University, treat much of the country's complex eye disease and train new ophthalmologists. If your eye has active retinal disease, advanced glaucoma or a corneal condition that needs several specialists, that kind of hospital can be the right first stop.

For elective lens surgery on an otherwise healthy eye, the safeguards are more specific. The lens power is calculated from measurements of your eye's length and corneal curvature. A small error there shows up as blur you notice every day. Then someone has to read those numbers alongside your work, your night driving and any past surgery, and decide which type of lens fits. Sometimes the answer is that none fits yet.

I was formerly a clinical instructor in the ophthalmology department at Samsung Seoul Hospital. I'm a member of the Korean Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. I mention this because lens selection is the part of this surgery where that background gets used.

The clinic's diagnostic equipment is from Topcon, and technicians on our diagnostic team perform the pre-op measurements. I lead your consultation and your surgery myself, so you're never handed off to someone you've never met. At the consultation, your lens choice is weighed against four things:

Wherever you go, ask who measures your eyes, who chooses the lens, who operates and who sees you the day after.

Every safe outcome starts with measurement, not guesswork. If your numbers point away from a multifocal lens, I'd rather tell you in the exam room than have you discover it on a dark highway at home. Either way, I'll explain the reasoning so you can weigh it yourself.

Will a multifocal lens end reading glasses for good?

Belief three: a multifocal lens means you'll never need reading glasses again. Trifocal and EDOF lenses are designed to give useful vision at more than one distance, and many people need glasses far less afterward. The trade-off is how they handle light. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes that multifocal lenses can cause more glare and halos around lights than monofocal ones. Some people still reach for readers for fine print in dim light.

EDOF designs generally give up a little near sharpness in return for fewer halos. Trifocals give more near vision and put more strain on your tolerance for night glare. A monofocal lens set for distance, with readers kept for close work, is still an option. If you drive long hours after dark, it's the one I'd discuss first.

Does old LASIK rule out lens surgery?

Belief four: having LASIK or LASEK in your twenties closes the door. For many eyes it doesn't. It does make the lens power calculation harder, because standard formulas assume a cornea that hasn't been reshaped. That's usually what a surgeon at home means by “tricky to calculate.”

If you still have your numbers from before the laser surgery, dig them out. The corneal questions covered in what to check before LASIK in Korea, such as thickness and shape, come back into play. The surface treatment many people had years ago is close to what's done today as LASEK, and who LASEK is actually for explains the current version.

If you were very nearsighted before that surgery, your eye is probably still long. A debate on refractive lens exchange in the AAO's EyeNet magazine treats retinal detachment risk in long, nearsighted eyes as part of the decision. Our article on assessing high myopia and astigmatism together is useful background.

After you fly home, follow-up continues

Belief five: once you're on the plane, you're on your own. At EYEONCE, Lifetime Aftercare means you can come back for a re-examination whenever you need one. If re-surgery or further treatment is ever needed, the clinic supports it. The detailed conditions are confirmed at your consultation. Your outcome still matters to me long after you fly home.

Two practical points. First, keep an ophthalmologist at home for routine checks, because lens surgery doesn't replace regular eye exams. Second, plan around the clinic's calendar. It's closed on Wednesdays and Sundays, closes at 16:00 on Saturdays, and every visit needs an appointment. For flights and the overall shape of the trip, see planning eye surgery in South Korea.

If you had LASIK or LASEK years ago, add three things to your WhatsApp message: the year, the name of the procedure and any old records you still have. I review records like these personally before you book a flight.

Risks, and when I'd ask you to wait

Lens replacement is an operation inside the eye. The National Eye Institute lists infection, bleeding, swelling and retinal detachment among the risks of cataract surgery, which uses the same lens-replacement technique. Dryness, light sensitivity and fluctuating focus are more common in the first weeks and usually temporary. Months or years later, the capsule that holds the new lens can turn cloudy. This is usually cleared with a short laser treatment.

With multifocal and EDOF lenses, many people notice halos and glare at night at first. These often become less noticeable as the brain adapts, but not for everyone.

I'd ask you to wait, or choose a different path, in three cases: your eye has a disease that should be treated first, dry eye is distorting your measurements, or your cornea and prescription point to a lens that wouldn't suit how you live. I go ahead only when the pre-op precision exam confirms you're a safe candidate. How quickly vision settles differs from one person to the next.

Before you message

Your presbyopia correction Korea University search might end at a teaching hospital or at my clinic in Gangnam. Either way, three things help the conversation: your current prescription, your eye history including any past surgery, and a sense of how you use your eyes up close and at night.

When you're ready, send your possible travel window and the number of days of leave you have on WhatsApp. Then ask how an exam, the surgery and a follow-up visit could fit inside it.

Results and suitability vary by individual. Your procedure recommendation is confirmed only through an in-person diagnostic exam.
