Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery removes the clouded natural lens and restores clear, natural vision with a personalized intraocular lens. At EYEONCE, every step — from diagnosis to surgery and aftercare — is guided by medical precision and a patient-first approach.

What to Expect

Precise diagnosis. Personalized surgery. Lasting results.

Blurry vision, glare at night, struggling to read? Cataracts don't only affect older people — and the solution is often better than most people expect. The cloudy lens is removed and a clear IOL restores your sight, frequently sharper than before.

Cataract surgery at EYEONCE follows a precise four-step process — a circular opening is made in the lens capsule, the clouded lens is broken down and removed with ultrasonic phacoemulsification, a premium intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted in its place, and the eye is carefully cleaned and stabilized.

A cataract itself is simply a clouding of the eye's natural lens: light can no longer focus properly on the retina, so vision gradually turns blurry, hazy and less vibrant — often described by patients as looking through a fogged window.

Cataracts don't only cause hazy vision — many patients also notice double or ghosted images, glare and light scatter at night, or a temporary improvement in near vision before things worsen.

Cataracts aren't limited to age either: diabetic, congenital, traumatic and secondary cataracts are all treated at EYEONCE alongside the far more common age-related type. Every case starts with the same lens-family decision — monofocal for one clear distance, multifocal for near-and-far freedom, or toric for astigmatism correction.

For patients who want the broadest possible freedom from glasses, EYEONCE offers a full range of premium trifocal and extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses — including Alcon's Vivity and Clareon PanOptix, PhysIOL's FineVision and FineVision HP, and Johnson & Johnson's Symbiose, Synergy and Lisa tri.

Toric versions of PanOptix, FineVision, Symbiose and Synergy add astigmatism correction on top of multifocal or EDOF vision, so patients with both cataracts and astigmatism don't have to choose between the two.

The right lens depends on daily life, not just prescription — how much you value distance clarity versus near-and-far freedom, how much night glare you're willing to tolerate, and whether astigmatism needs correcting.

Surgery day itself is straightforward: arrival and preparation in the morning, roughly 10–20 minutes of actual surgery per eye, and recovery before departure — often complete in a few hours.

Aftercare is equally structured: an eye shield during sleep for a week, no strenuous exercise for a month, and a clear timeline for washing your face and bathing safely.

Most patients notice a dramatic difference within days — sharper edges, brighter colors, reduced night glare — and EYEONCE's international patient program keeps every step clear along the way, from on-site interpretation to transparent, coordinated guidance through follow-up.

Choosing between monofocal, EDOF, multifocal and toric multifocal ultimately comes down to four factors mapped during your consultation: vision focus, astigmatism correction, night-glare tolerance and spectacle independence — so your lens is matched to your eyes and your lifestyle.

Cataract surgery — questions & answers

Yes. EYEONCE is a Seoul-government-registered clinic for international patients, with in-house interpreters on-site in English, Chinese, Mongolian and Thai. From your first WhatsApp message through surgery and follow-up, there is no language barrier.
For laser vision correction (SMILE PRO, SMILE LASIK, LASIK/LASEK) a stay of about 3-5 days is typical — exam and surgery can often be done the same day, with a next-day check-up before you fly home. For ICL and lens procedures we usually recommend 5-7 days. Send us your travel dates on WhatsApp and we will build the schedule around you.
In the rare case an enhancement is needed, it is covered by our lifetime aftercare. Please contact us on WhatsApp first (+82-10-6308-0984) — we will review a detailed re-examination and, where appropriate, arrange the re-treatment. Reaching out on WhatsApp is the fastest way to get guided next steps.
It depends on your lifestyle and eyes. Multifocal lenses reduce dependence on glasses across near and far; monofocal lenses give excellent clarity at one distance. After your diagnostic assessment, your surgeon recommends the best-fit lens and explains the trade-offs clearly.
No — the eye is fully numbed with topical anesthetic drops before surgery, so patients don't feel pain during the procedure itself, only gentle pressure. Most describe it as far more comfortable than expected. Mild scratchiness or light sensitivity for a day or two afterward is normal and manageable with the eye drops we prescribe.
Cost depends on which IOL you choose — monofocal, multifocal, EDOF or toric — and whether both eyes are treated in the same visit. Message us on WhatsApp with your prescription and lens preference for a personalized quote; many patients find premium IOL surgery in Seoul more affordable than standard cataract surgery back home.
Many patients notice improved vision within a day or two, with continued sharpening over one to a few weeks as the eye settles and adapts to the new lens. Mild glare or halos at night can occur early on and usually improve during the first 1–3 months.
Don't rub or press your eyes; avoid swimming, saunas and steam rooms for about a month, and eye makeup for two weeks. Keep water and soap out of the eye when washing, attend all follow-up checks, and use every prescribed eye drop exactly as instructed.
Bring your glasses and any prescription or medical records, and let us know about any medications or eye conditions. If you wear contact lenses, stop soft lenses for 5–7 days before your exam (2–3 weeks for hard / RGP lenses). Arrange transport or a companion for surgery day.
Temporary blurriness or glare can occur as your eye heals and adapts to the IOL. Use your prescribed eye drops diligently and rest your eyes. If you feel a foreign-body sensation or pain, please visit us right away — or see a local ophthalmologist first and then contact us.
Yes. If anything ever seems wrong after surgery, contact us at any time. Through a detailed re-examination we'll assess your condition and guide the appropriate next steps.
