Considering LASIK in Korea? Here's what to check first

Every year, patients fly to Seoul for LASIK after reading glowing reviews online — and some of them aren't actually good candidates once we examine their eyes. Here's what I tell patients before they book a flight, not after.

Why Korea

Why international patients choose Korea for LASIK

I'm Dr. Baek Dong-won, Representative Director at EYEONCE Eye Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul. Over the years I've operated on patients who flew in from the US, the Middle East and across Asia specifically for LASIK — and the reason is rarely just one thing. Korea has an unusually high concentration of refractive-surgery clinics in a small area of Seoul, which means intense competition on both technology and outcomes. For an international patient, that translates into access to current-generation laser platforms and surgeons who perform these procedures often, combined with an English-speaking patient journey that doesn't require guessing at a language barrier mid-consultation.

That said, "popular destination" isn't the same as "right for you." The decision that actually matters happens at the exam table, not in a review thread — which is the part I want to walk through honestly below.

Candidacy

Am I actually a good candidate for LASIK?

This is the question I'd answer first, before anything about technology or price. LASIK candidacy comes down to a handful of measurable things: your prescription (degree of myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism), your corneal thickness, your pupil size, and whether your eyes show any signs of keratoconus or significant dry eye. None of that can be assessed from a photo of your glasses prescription or a phone call — it needs a proper diagnostic work-up with corneal topography and thickness mapping.

What I see most often in international patients is one of two situations: either they assume they qualify because a friend had great results, or they assume they don't qualify because a clinic back home told them "no" years ago when the technology was more limited. Both assumptions are worth re-checking with current equipment before you rule yourself in or out.

Technology

LASIK, SMILE LASIK or LASEK — which one fits?

At EYEONCE we perform all three laser-based paths — LASIK and LASEK on the WaveLight EX500 excimer laser, and SMILE LASIK as a flapless, keyhole alternative on the Ziemer FEMTO Z8 femtosecond platform. Neither is categorically "better" — they solve for different corneas. LASIK's flap approach tends to give the fastest visual recovery for patients with suitably thick corneas. SMILE LASIK's flapless technique preserves more of the cornea's structural layers, which can matter for certain prescriptions or lifestyles. LASEK trades a slower recovery curve for suitability in thinner or more irregular corneas where a flap isn't the safest choice.

If your topography shows high myopia with a cornea too thin for any of the three, that's not the end of the conversation — it usually means ICL (implantable lens) surgery is the better-suited option, and I'd rather tell you that at the exam than perform a laser procedure your eyes aren't a safe fit for.

Recovery

What recovery actually looks like before you fly home

For LASIK, most patients notice meaningfully clearer vision within a day, with a next-day check-up confirming healing is on track before travel. SMILE LASIK follows a similar early timeline. LASEK is different — vision improves more gradually over the first one to a few weeks as the corneal surface heals, so if LASEK turns out to be your path, we build your travel schedule around that, not around LASIK's faster curve.

Either way, don't book a one-way return flight for the morning after surgery. A short buffer for the next-day check matters more than shaving a day off your trip.

Safety

Reducing the risk of dry eyes and glare

Dry eye sensation and some light glare or halos at night are the most common temporary effects after any laser vision correction, including LASIK. They're not failures of the surgery — they're part of how the cornea heals, and for most patients they settle within the first one to three months. We reduce the risk going in by screening for pre-existing dry eye and pupil size at the diagnostic stage (not deciding that after surgery), and we manage it coming out with prescribed drops and a clear, written aftercare schedule rather than a verbal "you'll be fine."

If symptoms are unusually severe or don't settle on the expected timeline, that's exactly when you should reach out — which brings us to what happens after you've already flown home.

Lifetime Aftercare

If something feels off after you land back home

This is the part of medical travel patients worry about most, and I think they're right to. Our answer is EYEONCE's lifetime aftercare commitment: if anything ever seems wrong after your surgery, you can contact us at any time, from anywhere. We'll go through a detailed re-examination (by video, by your local records, or in person if you can return) and, where appropriate, guide you through re-treatment. It doesn't disappear once your flight takes off.

In practice this usually means coordinating with you and, if useful, with a local ophthalmologist near you, rather than insisting you fly back to Seoul for every follow-up question.

If you are comparing countries, LASIK in Korea vs Singapore: what really differs covers follow-up in more detail.

Choosing a Clinic

How to actually choose a clinic in Korea as a foreign patient

Past the marketing, three things are worth checking directly: who reviews your diagnostic results and who operates — ideally the same person, which is how we run things at EYEONCE through our medical team; whether English-speaking staff are actually on-site rather than a translated brochure; and whether aftercare is explicitly a long-term commitment rather than something that ends at your airport departure. Ask these three questions of any clinic you're considering, including us — the answers should be specific, not reassuring-sounding.

Every patient's eyes are different. Candidacy for LASIK, SMILE LASIK, LASEK or ICL — and the recovery timeline that follows — can only be confirmed through an in-person (or video) consultation and a full pre-operative diagnostic exam with our team. Nothing in this article replaces that exam.
Good to Know

LASIK in Korea — questions & answers

Yes, when it's done at a clinic that runs the same pre-operative screening for international patients as it does for local ones. The procedure itself doesn't change based on nationality — what matters is a precise diagnostic exam, a doctor who reviews your case personally, and clear aftercare instructions you can actually follow once you're back home.
For LASIK or SMILE LASIK, about 3-5 days is typical — your exam and surgery can often happen within the same visit, followed by a next-day check-up before you fly. If your eyes turn out to be better suited to LASEK or a lens-based procedure like ICL, we'll tell you during the exam, since those recovery timelines are different.
LASIK creates a corneal flap with a femtosecond laser before reshaping the tissue underneath with an excimer laser. SMILE LASIK uses a flapless, keyhole technique that preserves more of the cornea's structural layers. Both are performed at EYEONCE; which one is right for you depends on your prescription and corneal thickness, not personal preference alone.
Not always, and that's exactly why the pre-op exam exists. High myopia or a thin cornea can rule out LASIK or LASEK, but it doesn't mean you have no options — many of these patients are better candidates for ICL (an implantable lens) instead. We'd rather tell you that honestly at the exam than put you through a laser procedure your eyes aren't suited for.
At EYEONCE, the surgeon who reviews your diagnostic results is the surgeon who performs your surgery and the one who follows up with you afterward. That continuity is intentional — recommendations come from the person who will actually operate, not a separate sales consultation.
Contact us on WhatsApp any time — this is covered by our lifetime aftercare commitment. We'll talk through what you're experiencing and, where a re-examination is needed, guide you on next steps, including coordinating with a local ophthalmologist if that's more practical than flying back immediately.
It depends on which procedure fits your eyes and the diagnostic package involved, so we don't quote a number until we've seen your prescription. Message us on WhatsApp with your current prescription for a personalized quote — Korea's laser vision correction is generally competitive against equivalent surgery in the US, UK or Australia, even after flights.
