LASEK gets treated online as LASIK's less convenient cousin. In practice, it's not a downgrade โ it's the right call for a specific kind of cornea, and worth understanding on its own terms rather than as a fallback.
I'm Dr. Baek Dong-won, Representative Director at EYEONCE Eye Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul. LASIK gets most of the attention online because its recovery curve is faster and its name shows up in more marketing. That's left LASEK looking like a consolation prize for patients who "can't" have LASIK โ which misses the point. LASEK isn't worse; it solves a different structural problem, and for the right cornea it's simply the more appropriate choice, not the backup plan.
Both LASIK and LASEK are performed on the same WaveLight EX500 excimer laser at EYEONCE, but they take different paths to the cornea. LASIK creates a thin flap, reshapes the tissue beneath it, and repositions the flap. LASEK skips the flap entirely โ the epithelium (the cornea's outermost layer) is gently loosened, the excimer laser reshapes the surface directly underneath, and the epithelium is repositioned afterward to heal naturally back into place. It's a surface-based technique, in the same family as PRK.
LASEK tends to be the better fit for patients with thinner corneas, smaller eyes with limited flap suitability, more sensitive eyes, or certain irregular corneal shapes where creating a flap carries more risk than it's worth. It's also sometimes preferred for patients in contact sports or other situations where a flap-related complication, however rare, is a bigger concern than a few extra days of recovery. None of this is a judgment call made casually โ it comes directly from your corneal topography and thickness measurements at the exam.
This is the part worth being direct about. LASEK's recovery is genuinely slower than LASIK's โ mild discomfort and light sensitivity are common in the first few days while the epithelium heals, and full visual stabilization typically takes one to a few months rather than the day or two that's common after LASIK. That's not a flaw in the procedure; it's the cost of avoiding a flap, and for the corneas that need it, it's a trade worth making.
For the measurements and healing days behind this, see LASEK in Korea: corneal numbers and healing days.
The first few days involve a protective bandage contact lens and prescribed drops while the epithelium heals over the treated surface. Vision tends to be blurrier in this early window than most patients expect from laser correction, which can be unsettling if you haven't been told to expect it โ gradual improvement follows through the first week, with continued sharpening over the following one to three months as the surface fully settles. Most international patients plan for about 5-7 days in Korea to cover the initial healing phase and a follow-up check before flying home.
In the rare case a re-treatment is needed down the line, it's covered under our lifetime aftercare commitment. Contact us on WhatsApp at any time, from anywhere, and we'll review a detailed re-examination and guide you through next steps. And if your exam shows LASEK isn't the right fit either โ for prescriptions or corneas outside what any laser procedure can safely treat โ we'll tell you that directly and talk through ICL as the alternative, the same way we discussed for LASIK candidates in our earlier guide.
Whether LASEK, LASIK, SMILE-based correction or ICL fits your eyes depends on your own corneal measurements. This article explains the trade-offs; it can't replace a diagnostic exam with our team.
