Can I Get LASIK With Astigmatism? Cost, Reviews and Methods Explained

Usually yes: LASIK, LASEK and SMILE LASIK can all treat astigmatism, so can i get lasik with astigmatism mostly comes down to your cylinder, corneal shape and thickness. Plan about 3-5 days in Seoul.

Can I get LASIK with astigmatism, or does the cylinder number on my prescription rule it out?

It is worth reading on before you book flights or decide anything.

After reading, you will know what the procedure costs depend on, what review threads get wrong, which methods suit which kind of astigmatism, and how many days to plan in Seoul.

Hello, I'm Dr. Baek Dong-won, Representative Director of EYEONCE.

At EYEONCE, in-house interpreters in English, Chinese, Mongolian and Thai are on-site, so you can talk to us in English from your first WhatsApp message. A stay of about 3-5 days is typical for laser vision correction, and if an enhancement is ever needed, it is covered by our lifetime aftercare.

I write this because online reviews often say astigmatism automatically rules out laser surgery, and many people give up before anyone has measured their eyes.

The short answer: usually yes. Your cylinder number, your corneal thickness and the shape of your cornea decide it, and I check all three in the exam.

What astigmatism changes for laser surgery

Astigmatism means the front of the eye is shaped less evenly than a basketball, so light does not land on one focus point. The National Eye Institute describes it as common and correctable with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery.

Laser vision correction works by reshaping the cornea, which is why astigmatism and nearsightedness can be treated in one plan. On a prescription, astigmatism shows up as CYL (cylinder) with an AXIS value, usually beside the sphere number.

The three numbers that decide it

Three things decide it: how much cylinder you have, how thick your corneas are, and how regular the corneal surface looks on a topography map. EYEONCE lists Topcon diagnostics among its equipment, and this is the kind of measurement that equipment exists for.

Say you wear glasses for mild nearsightedness and a noticeable amount of astigmatism, and you have read that astigmatism means no laser. When I look at a case like yours, I do not start from the cylinder number alone. I check how thick your cornea is and what shape it has, because those decide whether a flap-based method, a surface method or SMILE LASIK is the safer fit. If your cornea is thinner, I may lean toward LASEK, which preserves the corneal surface. If you play sports or live an active life, I weigh that as well. The same cylinder number can therefore lead to different recommendations for two people.

Which procedure fits which kind of astigmatism?

For astigmatism with nearsightedness, three laser paths are on the menu at EYEONCE, and a lens implant (ICL) sits behind them for eyes outside the laser range. The table shows the usual match, and the exam confirms it.

Your eyesPath usually consideredWhat the exam confirms
Mild-to-moderate myopia with astigmatism, healthy and suitably thick corneasLASIK, a thin flap plus excimer reshapingThickness and surface shape
Thinner corneas, sensitive eyes or contact-sport lifestyleLASEK, surface treatment with no flapWhether the surface route fits
Myopia with astigmatism, flap-free preferredSMILE LASIK, a 2-4 mm keyhole incisionWhether your numbers suit SMILE

LASIK creates a thin flap first, while LASEK loosens and repositions the surface layer, a technique in the same family as PRK. The AAO's EyeWiki entry on LASEK explains the surface approach, and its healing curve is longer than LASIK's.

SMILE LASIK avoids a flap entirely, and our piece on what makes SMILE LASIK different covers who it tends to suit. If you want to see how particular prescriptions map to procedures, how the numbers decide your procedure has worked examples.

When someone shows me a cylinder number and asks if it is too high, I tell them the number is only half the answer. Two people with the same cylinder can have very different corneas, and the shape of the surface is what I want to see before recommending anything. If the map looks irregular or the cornea is thin, saying no to a flight is kinder than saying yes.

How many days should you plan in Seoul?

Plan about 3-5 days for laser vision correction, and 5-7 days if a lens procedure such as ICL is on the table. Exam and surgery can often be done the same day, and the next-day check-up comes before you fly home.

The calendar details matter more than the procedure time:

Our LASIK in Korea guide lists what to check before booking a flight.

What if something feels off after you fly home?

If you feel a foreign-body sensation or pain, visit the clinic right away, or see a local ophthalmologist first and then contact EYEONCE. Temporary blurriness is common while the cornea heals, and screens are best limited as much as possible for the first 1-3 months after LASIK or LASEK, with prescribed drops used as directed.

Contact the clinic on WhatsApp first, and the team reviews a detailed re-examination and, where appropriate, arranges the re-treatment. For SMILE LASIK specifically, when you can return to daily life is laid out day by day.

What decides the cost of laser surgery for astigmatism?

The cost is not one fixed item, because it follows what your eyes need. The method matters first: LASIK, LASEK and SMILE LASIK work differently and are planned differently. The amount of correction counts too, including how much astigmatism sits on top of nearsightedness. The number of days you stay in Seoul changes the plan, since a stay of about 3-5 days is typical for laser vision correction, with a check-up the day after surgery. Follow-up and aftercare belong in the picture as well. To get the figure for your own case, send your prescription and a photo of it on WhatsApp and ask for it there.

Risks, and who should wait

Asking can i get lasik with astigmatism is the right first question; the second is what can go wrong. Common, usually temporary effects are dry eye, glare and halos at night, and fluctuating vision in the first weeks. Less often, residual astigmatism or a gradual drift back toward the old prescription can show up, which is the situation an enhancement addresses. Rare but serious problems exist, and the FDA's overview of what to expect during and after surgery lists them plainly.

People who are usually asked to wait or choose another route include those with an irregular cornea, a very thin cornea, a changing prescription or significant dry eye. Results and healing differ from person to person, and the in-person exam decides which route is realistic for your eyes.

If you are past 40, remember that near focus also changes with age. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes presbyopia usually becomes noticeable in the 40s, so fixing distance astigmatism may still leave you with reading glasses.

What to send before you book flights

If you are arranging this for a parent, send their prescription and the travel window instead. When you come to Seoul, I examine your eyes myself and recommend the method that fits you.

Results and suitability vary by individual. Your procedure recommendation is confirmed only through an in-person diagnostic exam.

Can i get lasik with astigmatism — questions & answers

Not automatically. The amount of cylinder is one factor, and corneal thickness, surface shape and a stable prescription matter just as much. When LASIK does not fit, surface treatment, SMILE LASIK or a lens implant may be considered instead.
Bring your glasses and prescription records, and skip eye makeup on exam day.
Possibly, once presbyopia sets in. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes it usually becomes noticeable in the 40s, and laser correction of distance vision does not stop that process. EYEONCE also lists presbyopia correction among its procedures.
