SMILE Laser Eye Surgery Cost Korea: What Moves Your Quote? Reviews, Methods and Recovery

The cost of SMILE in Korea is set by the method your exam supports, the pre-op measurements, your days in Seoul and the aftercare included. Send your prescription on WhatsApp for a personalized quote.

SMILE laser eye surgery cost Korea: is the number you were quoted the whole story, or will it move once someone measures your corneas?

Read this before you line up quotes or book a flight to Seoul.

By the end you'll know which factors set the cost of SMILE for your eyes, which claims in online reviews hold up, how the SMILE methods differ, and what recovery asks of your days in Korea. That makes it easier to tell which option fits your eyes and your budget.

Hello, I'm Dr. Baek Dong-won, Representative Director of EYEONCE Eye Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul. I'm a former Clinical Instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Samsung Seoul Hospital and a member of the Korean Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

At EYEONCE, the surgeon who evaluates you is the surgeon who operates and follows your recovery. We're a Seoul-government-registered clinic for international patients with in-house interpreters in English, Chinese, Mongolian and Thai, and our Lifetime Aftercare covers re-examination and, where needed, re-treatment support, with the details confirmed at consultation.

I wrote this because people often compare one headline number between clinics before anyone has checked whether their corneas suit SMILE at all.

What you pay for SMILE in Korea is set by four things: the method your exam supports, the pre-op measurements, the number of days you stay, and the aftercare included. The figure for your own eyes starts from your prescription.

If you have a recent glasses prescription or eye-exam printout, send a photo of it on WhatsApp with one question: what would SMILE cost for my eyes? Messaging with your prescription gets you a personalized quote built on your own numbers.

SMILE laser eye surgery cost Korea: the factors that set your figure

A SMILE quote bundles three kinds of cost: what the procedure involves, what your eyes need, and what your trip takes. These are the five factors I'd go through with you.

FactorWhy it moves your totalWhat to ask
MethodSMILE PRO, SMILE LASIK, LASIK/LASEK and ICL are different procedures, and costs vary by procedureWhich method do my numbers point to?
Pre-op precision examCandidacy rests on your prescription, corneal thickness and eye healthIs the exam part of the quote?
Contact lens breakSoft lenses off at least 5โ€“7 days before the exam, hard/RGP lenses at least 3 weeksDoes my lens type change my dates?
Days in SeoulAbout 3โ€“5 days is typical for laser correction; hotel, meals and leave are yoursCan my exam and surgery be on the same day?
AftercareLifetime Aftercare covers an enhancement in the rare case one is neededWhat does aftercare cover after I'm home?

The method is the factor people underestimate. A thin cornea or a very high prescription can point toward LASEK or an implantable lens, and ICL has its own cost logic, which I've laid out in what drives ICL surgery cost in Korea.

The days are the factor you control most. Flights, hotel nights and the leave you take are part of what SMILE costs you even though no clinic invoices them, so it pays to plan a stay that fits in fewer days without dropping the next-day check-up.

To get the figure for your case, ask on WhatsApp and name which of the two SMILE methods you'd like priced.

SMILE PRO or SMILE LASIK: how the two methods differ

SMILE stands for small incision lenticule extraction. A femtosecond laser shapes a thin disc of tissue, the lenticule, inside the cornea, and the surgeon removes it through a small incision, so no corneal flap is lifted. A 2014 review by Reinstein and colleagues in Eye and Vision traces how the technique developed and summarizes its clinical outcomes.

At EYEONCE, both SMILE PRO and SMILE LASIK are flapless keyhole procedures. SMILE PRO uses a keyhole incision of about 2โ€“4 mm and is delivered as Clear SMILE Supra, under the same treatment protocol for every patient. What sets it apart is a shorter treatment flow, a higher-quality lenticule interface and lower energy delivery, and for the right candidates I recommend it over standard SMILE.

SMILE tends to suit people with active lifestyles, a noticeable difference between the two eyes, or a tight travel schedule where low downtime matters. Which of the two methods your eyes suit is the first thing that moves your quote, so ask about both in the same message.

When the cornea is thin or the eye is sensitive, the other paths come into the conversation. LASIK and LASEK are done on the WaveLight EX500 excimer laser. LASEK preserves the epithelium instead of making a flap and suits thinner corneas, but it heals more slowly, with discomfort and light sensitivity in the first days and full stabilization typically by month one to three.

No corneal laser method stops presbyopia, the gradual loss of near focus that comes with age. If reading glasses are already creeping into your life, read what drives presbyopia surgery cost in Korea before you budget for SMILE. And if a parent is the one weighing eye surgery, the factors are different again; what changes cataract surgery cost in Korea covers those.

What do SMILE reviews get right, and what do they miss?

Read enough review threads and the same four claims come up. Some hold, and some need a footnote.

"It doesn't hurt." Mostly true for the procedure itself. The eye is numbed with anesthetic drops, so you feel pressure rather than pain during the roughly 10-minute procedure. Mild scratchiness on the first day is common, and prescribed drops manage it.

"I saw perfectly the next morning." Partly true. Most people see clearly enough for daily life by the next morning, but vision keeps sharpening over the following weeks, and some fluctuation or temporary haziness in the first one to three months is normal while the cornea heals.

"SMILE means no dry eye." Not quite. Because no flap is cut, SMILE is generally linked to less dryness than flap-based LASIK, but less is not none, and some people still need artificial tears for a while.

"One clinic quoted this, another quoted that." Accurate as far as it goes. Two quotes only compare if they cover the same method, the same exam and the same aftercare, and a review rarely says which.

An example: five days of leave and a soft-lens habit

Say you're 31, around -4.50 in both eyes with mild astigmatism, you've worn soft contacts every day for years, and you have five days of leave. This is how I'd reason it through. The lenses come out at home at least 5โ€“7 days before the exam, so that break starts before you fly.

Then the calendar: we're closed on Wednesdays and Sundays, so if you land on a Sunday, the exam and, for a suitable candidate, same-day surgery can fall on Monday, the next-day check-up on Tuesday, and you keep a spare day before the flight home. Surgery on a Tuesday would push the check-up past the closed Wednesday.

If your exam shows a thinner cornea than your prescription suggested, I'd rather talk about LASEK or ICL than force SMILE into a five-day window, and the quote would change with the plan. That's the case where an early quote and a final one differ, and it's why the measurement comes first.

How many days in Seoul does SMILE recovery take?

For laser vision correction, including SMILE PRO and SMILE LASIK, a stay of about 3โ€“5 days is typical. The exam and surgery can often be done on the same day, with a next-day check-up before you fly home. We're open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 09:00 to 18:00 and Saturday from 09:00 to 16:00, with a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00. Appointments are required, and we're closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

From Incheon Airport you can reach us by taxi, by AREX and subway, or by limousine bus.

The first month asks more of you than the first day:

A jjimjilbang evening is on many Seoul itineraries; this is the trip to leave it out. For the rest of your planning, from arrival to the flight home, our guide to eye surgery in South Korea goes through the steps.

What if something feels wrong after you fly home?

Risks and side effects to know

In the first days, scratchiness, watering and light sensitivity are common, and glare or halos around lights at night can show up early on. Blurriness and fluctuating vision can come and go over the first one to three months as the cornea heals, and dryness is possible after any corneal laser surgery. Less often, the correction ends up slightly short or over and an enhancement is discussed later; rarer still are infection or inflammation, which need prompt care.

How eyes heal differs from person to person, and the pre-op exam is what decides whether SMILE is right for you.

Some people should wait or choose another path. In general that includes a prescription that has changed within the past year, pregnancy or breastfeeding, a thin or irregularly shaped cornea (an early sign of keratoconus is a reason to stop and reconsider), active eye infection or inflammation, and certain autoimmune conditions. The FDA's guidance on when LASIK isn't advisable lists several of these, and the same reasoning applies to corneal laser surgery in general.

I only go ahead when the pre-op precision exam confirms your eyes are safe for the procedure. If your measurements say SMILE isn't the right trade for your cornea, I'll tell you, explain why, and talk through what fits instead. A quote should follow the measurement; it can't replace it.

If you feel a foreign-body sensation or pain after you're home, see a local ophthalmologist first and then contact us, or come in right away if you're still in Seoul. In the rare case an enhancement is needed, it's covered by our Lifetime Aftercare: message us on WhatsApp first, and a detailed re-examination decides whether re-treatment is appropriate. The CDC's medical tourism advice also suggests planning follow-up care at home before you travel, and I agree: know which local ophthalmologist you'd call before you leave.

If follow-up is what's holding you back, send your travel dates on WhatsApp with the number of leave days you have, and ask how aftercare works once you're home. We'll build the schedule around your dates.

What should you have ready before you book a flight?

Two things make the first conversation useful: your current prescription, and a note on your contact lenses, which type and how long you've worn them, since that sets when your lens break starts. For the exam itself, bring your glasses and any prescription records, skip eye makeup that day, and arrange transport or a companion for surgery day.

Message us on WhatsApp with your contact lens type and the one question you most want answered (for many people it's what Lifetime Aftercare covers after they fly home), and I review your records personally before you book a flight. When you come to Seoul, I'll examine your eyes, recommend the SMILE method or the alternative that fits them, and follow your recovery myself.

Results and suitability vary by individual. Your procedure recommendation is confirmed only through an in-person diagnostic exam.

Yes, because lenses reshape the cornea and skew the measurements. Stop soft lenses at least 5โ€“7 days before your exam, hard or RGP lenses at least 3 weeks, and ortho-k lenses at least 1 month. If you're unsure, ask on WhatsApp.
